Sydenham House

Sydenham House is an extension and refurbishment of a detached home in South East London, designed to provide more space and better flow for a growing family. The proposals centre around a new single-storey rear addition, accommodating an open-plan kitchen, dining and sitting area, along with a utility room and cloakroom set discreetly to the side and rear of the existing footprint. The form is simple and calm — a flat-roofed volume that steps back to create a sheltered patio and maintain a sense of scale in the garden.

Externally, the palette references the existing house: red brick and white render, with a crisp parapet edge capped in stone. The new glazing is timber-framed — a combination of French and bifolding doors that open the space up to the garden. A green sedum roof brings a soft, planted surface to the extension, improving its environmental performance and helping it sit gently in its context.

Internally, the focus is on simplicity and clarity. Natural materials and clean lines create a warm, adaptable space that feels connected — both to the rest of the house and to the garden beyond.
